French Sounds - Watermelonworks

About Us

At Watermelonworks™, we believe that if people can see the letters, say the letters out loud and hear the sounds, the learning process is enhanced. You gain confidence, and your desire to learn is strengthened. It eases frustrations and builds confidence to want to learn.

This product has been developed with students over the course of 10 years. Most of our students have a variety of other issues besides French as a Second Language. Since this has been an effective tool for children who learn differently, it would certainly enhance the learning of average children. In one month’s time, only one hour per week, and use of the game at home providing daily practice, average students would know the required letter combinations to speak proper French and would enhance the French program!

In accelerating this process, it would support the educational system in such a way that standardised testing scores would improve as well as the children’s abilities would greatly increase and the course content could be embellished to start learning more in depth skills at an earlier age.

Phonetic Processing

Phonetic processing is the ability to take letter combinations and form one phoneme. A phoneme is a single sound with more than one letter. There are many ways in the French language to say the same sound. It is important to be able to identify what combinations make which sound and how to apply that letter combination into the grammatical language structure to be able to build a simple vocabulary, to gain comprehension and confidence.

This tool is excellent for those learning a new language in the fact that a person will gain confidence in speaking ability. If you believe that you can succeed, and gain the required confidence, then you will think it easy to learn a second language. People hesitate for fear of making mistakes. It eliminates that frustration of not comprehending what another is trying to say by not being able to hear the correct pronunciation of the word.

About The Game

This game is comprised of a sound card game as well as a board game. It illustrates the French phonetics as well as an English pronunciation.

This is a visual, tactile, and auditory method, therefore making the ability to learn the language more simplified and easier to comprehend.

A visual sample of 2 cards are displayed at right.

A Spanish Version is in development
and will be available soon!

About Me

My name is Jenny Gray. I have been tutoring students for the past 12 years in French language. I have an honours degree in French Linguistics and Literature from the University of Western, Ontario. I would like to see an easier methodology for children with learning difficulties to learn in a more simplified straightforward method that is understood by them. I can offer that assistance with The Sound Games.
